Common Interview Questions

Ryan Kelly

Interview season is in full swing. Some of you already have an invite or two, and a lot more will go out between now and the end of November.

When I prep students for interviews, the questions that cause the most stress are usually the ones they already know are coming: Tell me about yourself. Why medicine? What’s your biggest weakness? Everyone expects them, and that pressure tends to lead to overthinking and overstuffed answers.

In this video, I go through the most common medical school interview questions one at a time and how I’d structure each answer. A few things I get into:

  • Why leaning on a story can actually weaken your “why medicine?” answer
  • Why “why our school?” is more about you than it is about the school
  • What to do when you’re asked about the biggest problem in healthcare and you feel too early in your path to have a good answer
