Kat was born in New York but her heart (and the last 15 years of her life) belongs to the small Los Angeles suburb of La Canada Flintridge. Kat has always loved being creative: she doodles constantly and sews sock monkeys in her free time. She even considered going to art school before deciding to take the plunge into becoming a physician.
Since being treated for a rare eye cancer called retinoblastoma at age six months, Kat’s curiosity about her own disease and medicine in general continues to grow. For five years, Kat worked at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in a drug discovery lab that focused on the same cancer that affected her as a child. Kat graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 2016 alongside eleven other super nerds with a degree in Chemistry. During her time at JHU, she was the head TA for an organic chemistry lab course, did research at Johns Hopkins Hospital in the Departments of Pathology and Clinical Pharmacology, and co-founded the JHU Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society. Kat always likes a challenge: her last final exam before graduating was the day after she took the MCAT!
For her gap year, Kat is performing clinical research at the Cole Eye Institute - Cleveland Clinic. As a future physician, Kat hopes to use her experiences with cancer to give her patients the hope of living a normal life. As a Passport advisor, she wants to help her fellow premeds navigate the endlessly nerve-wracking yet exciting process of applying to medical school.
