Matt Phillips

Matt was born in Palm Springs, California. He grew up in the Coachella Valley and nearby High Desert. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from North Carolina Central University with a B.A. in mass communication. During his final undergraduate year, Matt was editor-in-chief at the award-winning Campus Echo student newspaper. After graduating, Matt completed an internship as a feature writer at The Denver Post. He reported on pop music, poetry books and craft breweries.

Matt enjoys helping other writers refine and improve their own voices. He looks at writing as a process akin to sculpture. Great writing requires hard work, discipline and honesty.

When he isn’t helping students write excellent essays, Matt enjoys working on his own writing projects. He is a movie junkie and a book lover. Oh, right, and he loves music too. He likes to go trail running, cycling and camping.

Matt is earning his M.F.A. in creative writing at The University of Texas at El Paso.
